Avondale artist Corien Siepelinga has taken ownership of Mala Galleria in Kennett Square, and recently opened her first exhibition, “All Creatures Great and Small,” writes John Chambless for the Chester County Press.

Siepelinga, a painter who first showed her work at Mala Galleria about four years ago, went to see gallery owner Stella Scott last October to talk about some new work she was doing when she learned Scott was moving and planning to sell the business. That’s when Siepelinga started to think about taking over the business.

Born in the Netherlands, Siepelinga grew up in Canada. She has been living in the U.S. for 15 years, moving around the country because of her husband’s job with DuPont Canada.

Siepelinga’s previous career included 16 years in nursing, including 12 years in intensive care units in Canada, Texas, and at Jennersville Regional Hospital. She started to paint and do artwork in the evenings to relieve work-related stress.

As a gallery owner, Siepelinga is tapping her friends in the local art world, and reaching out for other suggestions of artists to feature at the gallery.
