One Year After Transaction, Longwood Gardens Continues Plans for Historic Granogue Estate

Longwood Gardens representatives have yet to confirm how the Gardens will make use of the Granogue estate and surrounding land.

Longwood Gardens is continuing plans for its recent acquisition of the Granogue estate, write Andre Lamar and Patricia Talorico for Delaware News Journal.

Longwood Gardens purchased the 505-acre estate—which includes a historic mansion surrounded by acres of greenery—in January 2024. The cost of the estate is unknown, but real estate experts estimate the property to be worth at least $50 million.

Now, a year after the transaction, representatives for Longwood have yet to reveal exact plans for the estate. Additionally, they have not revealed a potential date for the space to be open to the public. However, officials state that the primary goal with the purchase is to conserve the land and natural space.

The purchase of the Grenogue estate continues Longwood Gardens’ long history with the du Pont family: the estate’s mansion was home to Irénée du Pont, whose uncle Pierre S. du Pont first purchased Longwood’s original property in 1906.

Grace Enbring, daughter of Irénée du Pont, states that her family strongly supports the Granogue estate remaining with Longwood Gardens, as its lush greenery and historical architecture continue to be significant to the greater Brandywine community.
