Pennsylvania placed in the lower part of the list among the best states in the nation, according to a new ranking recently published by the U.S. News & World Report.

The Best States rankings measured how well states are performing for their citizens by looking at several key factors, including health care, education, economy, roads, bridges, internet and other infrastructure, public safety, natural environment, fiscal stability, and the opportunities it affords its residents.

The Keystone State ranked at No. 40. It had the best showing in the Health Care category, where it placed tenth. Opportunity also placed Pennsylvania into the upper part of the list at No. 17.

Meanwhile, the state placed at No. 29 in Crime & Corrections, No. 35 in Natural Environment, No. 36 in Education, and No. 38 in Economy.

Pennsylvania had the worst showing in Infrastructure (No. 46) and Fiscal Stability (No. 47).

The state boasts several fields in which it excels. It has been one of the most important industrial centers for coal, steel, and railroads in the country. Today, it is among the largest producers of canned fruit and vegetable-specialty products, chocolate and cocoa products, and potato chips and pretzels.
