Boyds on Chestnut Street has been in business for 84 years.

Iconic Philadelphia brick-and-mortar stores have been making their way to the Main Line. Since the onset of COVID-19, many flagship stores that planted seeds in the city are branching out to the suburbs.

The high-end clothing store Boyds, which has lived on Chestnut Street in Rittenhouse Square for 84 years, decided to take the plunge.

This unique shopping experience equipped with a team of tailors opened a simulation store in Wayne last year, writes Sandy Smith for Philadelphia Magazine.

“During COVID, the city was pretty quiet,” said Boyds president Kent Gushner. “Nothing was happening … we were doing that based on no other reason than trying to survive.”

According to Gushner, venturing out into the suburbs is also a great way to increase accessibility and customers, who live in Malvern and West Chester.

Other Philadelphia businesses such as Di Brunos and White Dog Café have also opened in Wayne.
