Throughout October and November, students and staff from Rustin High School in the West Chester Area School District collected over 1,800 books for the school’s third annual book drive, writes Holly Herman for the West Chester Patch.

Books collected were asked to be in new or gently used conditions, and World Language department teachers also donated books in Spanish.

“It is wonderful to share these books with children who like to read, just as I do, in time for the holidays,” said student Sienna Marciano.

More than 22 boxes were donated to organizations that aim to help children and young adults in underserved areas. These agencies included WC Friends Association, Chester County Domestic Violence Center, Community Volunteers in Medicine, Young Parents of CCIU, and others.

“The book drive continues to grow each year, and we are so grateful for our community’s help and our students’ enthusiasm,” said Kimberly Freese a gifted resource & learning support teacher. “It is thanks to them that we continue to get valuable books into the hands of families who may not otherwise have many books at home.”

The school plans to hold another book drive next fall.
