Jabari Stocker, left, saved the life of Jonathon Rivera after Rivera choked on a cap

Quick thinking by 17-year-old Jabari Stocker, a student at Coatesville Area Senior High School, helped save the life of one of his classmates, writes Fran Maye for The Daily Local News

Johnny Rivera, a 16-year-old junior, forgot to remove the cap from his inhaler before he used it in class last week. The cap went down his throat and he started choking. Before the teacher had a chance to react, Stocker, who was nearby, jumped to help his friend.

He performed the Heimlich maneuver on the other for around 15 seconds. After several tries, he was able to dislodge the cap from Rivera’s throat.

“I dealt with it in the moment,” said Stocker. “I don’t know where I learned (the Heimlich Maneuver) from. I was just trying to get it (the cap) out as fast as I could.”
