Driven by the need to preserve his family legacy, Robert Lange, owner of Willisbrook Farm in Malvern, made a horror movie in which the sympathy lies with the murderous protagonist, writes Peter Crimmins for WHYY

Lange co-wrote and co-produced Hayride to Hell. The movie stars horror legends Kane Hodder, Jason in Friday the 13th franchise, and Bill Moseley, from Texas Chainsaw Massacre II

Moseley plays a farmer who slaughters his enemies who want to steal his land during a Halloween hayride attraction. Most of the victims are local elected officials, which might seem like an interesting choice since Lange is also a local elected official — he has been a member of the Willistown Township board of supervisors since 1996.

Lange is a huge proponent of open space. As he has no children, he is hoping the movie will help him secure the funds to ensure the farm his family has owned for generations is maintained as farmland into the distant future.

“I thought we could do a movie that was successful and could potentially lead to a revenue stream that we could put into an endowment for the farm,” he said.

The film premiered last night at the Colonial Theatre in Phoenixville.
