Sara Dickens-Trillo — a native of Chihuahua, Mexico, who moved to El Paso, Texas, when she was 15 years — is the Bilingual Program Director at Mighty Writers, a nonprofit that teaches kids to think and write with clarity, and the President of Casa Guanajuato Kennett Square, a nonprofit that promotes and preserves the Mexican culture’s traditions and customs.

Dickens-Trillo said her proudest professional achievements are impacting the most-vulnerable and food-insecure members of her community and supporting Latino/Latinx youth with after-school programs and helping them embrace their heritage and traditions.

She shared her perspective on leadership.

“A successful leader looks at a problem and works for a solution, inspiring others to do it as well,” said Dickens-Trillo. “I try to lead by example. If you want changes in your community, don’t look for someone else to do it for you.”

Delegation is one aspect of leadership that she is working to improve.

“I’m trying not to fix the world by myself or give so much of my time and energy to everyone else and, in the process, neglect myself and my family,” said Dickens-Trillo.

Of the 12 Principles of the Scout Law — Trustworthy, Loyal, Helpful, Friendly, Courteous, Kind, Obedient, Cheerful, Thrifty, Brave, Clean, and Reverent — “Helpful” resonates the most with Dickens-Trillo.

The Chester County Council, Boy Scouts of America will honor Dickens-Trillo and the 11 other VISTA Leadership Megastars at an awards reception on Thursday, Oct. 20 at its new Program, Activity, and Resource Campus (PARC) in Exton. Sponsorship opportunities are still available. For more information, contact Lisa Antonucci at Lisa.Antonucci@scouting.org or 610-696-2900 x 112.
