How to Write a Resignation Letter for Switching from Full-Time to Part-Time

There are a lot of life events that can lead to you wanting to step back from a full-time schedule. But just because you can’t commit as much time to your job as before doesn’t mean you have to quit altogether.

If you want to be part-time going forward, it might be time to compose a letter requesting to resign from full-time status.

Courtesy of Indeed, here are some of the core components you should be including in your request to become a part-time employee.

State Why You Want to Go Part-Time

The company will likely want a reason for your request. You don’t need to go overly personal, but simply stating something like you need more time to take care of family, or you want to go back to school to further your education are sufficient reasons.

List What You Have Achieved So Far

Your boss will likely be more open to granting your request if you have demonstrable accomplishments. Outlining what you have done shows the value you have brought to the job and makes it more reasonable that you would now ask something of them in return.

Explain How This Could Help the Company Too

Maybe the company has been laying off workers recently and you going part-time could help avoid that outcome for someone else. Or maybe you stepping back a bit would allow someone deserving to be promoted into taking on some of your former duties.

Share Your Gratitude

Overall, just don’t turn this into a moment to gripe about the job. Being full-time was an opportunity, and though it may no longer be the best fit for you, it is still something to be appreciative of. Being kind and optimistic in your approach will show that this isn’t you trying to slowly bail on the company.

You can’t guarantee that the company will grant your request but articulating yourself professionally will give you the best shot of seeing the outcome you want.
