Jay Wright knew it was time to retire as Villanova University’s basketball coach when he found himself at mass, texting his players during the homily, reports The Associated Press as printed in the New York Post.

“I look forward not to live that way,” he said.

Wright choked back tears last week, explaining his sudden retirement at Villanova. He said he no longer had “the edge” to continue coaching at a championship level.

His final season ended with a Big East Tournament title and a fourth trip to the Final Four.

The 60-year-old assured everyone there were no health issues or future involvements with other programs or the NBA that prompted his decision.

Instead, he said he was ready to hit the beach.

Wright’s inner Villanova circle knew the retirement was coming at the end of the season but hoped he’d change his mind.

Now his longtime assistant, Kyle Neptune, who was coach at Fordham last season, takes over.

“My role now is just the standard-bearer for Villanova basketball,” the 37-year-old Neptune said. “My job now is to make sure we keep this culture together. Make sure we hold this high standard of what Coach has created here.”
