Suburban bakeries are seeing prices rise on nearly every item they need to operate, forcing them to pass on some of these extra costs to consumers, writes Justin Backover for WFMZ 69 News.

Kathleen Lochel, co-owner of Lochel’s Bakery in Hatboro, sees these neverending increases as a bigger issue than the pandemic ever was.

“What we’re seeing now, though, is far worse than the past two years,” she said.

Although food prices have been slowly going up for a while this year, they skyrocketed after the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. According to the U.N., the Global Food Price Index jumped about 13 percent in March, most notably on items used by bakers, such as wheat, oil, sugar, and more.

Lochel said that in some cases, prices have gone up by 10 or even 20 percent in one day. The situation is being made even more difficult by shortages, including some of the cheeses.

But despite the uncertainty, Lochel believes her business will survive.

“I’m not as concerned for my business as I am for other people’s businesses,” she said.
