Darren Girardeau, a native of Hegins, Pa., in Schuylkill County, is the Director of Emergency Services, Transport & Radiology Nursing at Penn Medicine’s Chester County Hospital, where he ensures “the smooth operation of the 24/7 facility that treats people of all ages.”

Girardeau, who began working as a lifeguard when he was 16 years old, earned a bachelor’s degree in Music Education from West Chester University, a bachelor’s degree in Nursing from Thomas Jefferson University, and a master’s degree in Nursing from WCU.

He credits a friend, John Stott, with having the biggest impact on his career.

“While I was in college for music, John convinced me to start volunteering in Emergency Medical Services,” said Girardeau. “If he had not done that, I would have never become a nurse and would not be where I am today.”

His proudest professional achievement has been leading his team through a four-year, multi-phase renovation project in the Emergency Department.

“This was a monumental task that required the coordination of so many team members,” said Girardeau. “We spent countless hours planning, implementing, and adapting to an ever-changing environment.”

His favorite restaurant in Chester County is Amani’s BYOB in Downingtown.

Girardeau and the rest of the 2022 Class of VISTA Millennial Superstars will be honored at the Awards Reception & Celebration held outdoors on Tuesday, May 10 at Penn State Great Valley. The in-person event will feature food trucks, drinks, touchless registration, a VIP tent, and boundless opportunities to network. It will also be live-streamed.
