Cornelio “Chada” Phipps, 16, recently won the 125-pound weight class at the USA Boxing National Championships, writes Steven Hoffman for the Chester County Press

Phipps, an Oxford High School student with 12 championship belts from different competitions, is no stranger to winning. Each of his victories brings him closer to his dream of representing the U.S. at the 2024 Olympics.

Phipps discovered his love of boxing when he was four years old. That’s when his father, Dwayne, began to show him the ropes. His father had trained under Delaware boxing great Dave Tiberi, so he knew well how to prepare his son for the demanding, unforgiving sport. It also helped that Phipps was a quick study.

“Everything just came naturally in the ring,” he said.

By the time he had started middle school, Phipps was working on improving his boxing skills regularly and was already taking part in boxing competitions. The hard work has paid off.

He has compiled a 32-0 record at national tournaments and has an overall record of 141-15. Additionally, he has won six national championships.

Phipps’s current goal is to represent Team USA at the 2024 Olympics in Paris.
