Longtime Art Teacher in Downingtown Finds a New Canvas for His Work
Artist Brian Hearns — a 15-year art teacher at East Ward Elementary School in Downingtown — is known for works that command attention, writes Melissa Jacobs for Main Line Tonight.
His art is part-illustration and part-painting, emblazoned with symbols and usually accompanied by written words. It can be taken as decorative or as commentary on modern America.
“If something speaks to your soul, that’s great,” said Hearns. “And if it just makes you smile, that’s okay, too.”
Many people are getting introduced to his work thanks to a new King of Prussia Mall installation that includes the artist’s “Bonded To Comprise.” The installation is being sponsored by Valley Forge Tourism and Convention Board and features 15 local artists.
This month has been exciting for Hearns for multiple reasons. He released sweatshirts emblazoned with his art, which became instant bestsellers.
“I am surprised, grateful, and inspired in equal parts,” said Hearns.
While clothing is new for the artist, he has been creating accessories for a long time, including one-of-a-kind, leather cuff bracelets that are fastened with repurposed belt buckles.
