Puppy Bowl entertainingly works to create adoptions that end happily like this one.

Several pooches from Brandywine Valley SPCA in West Chester participated in this year’s Puppy Bowl in the hopes of breaking stereotypes and improving their chance of being adopted. Nick Vadala captured the cute canine competition for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

The 2022 Puppy Bowl showed off more than 100 pups from 67 shelters and rescues from across the nation. Ten of them came from six shelters and rescues in the Philadelphia area.

The goal of the event pitted Team Ruff against Team Fluff as they duked it out for the “Lombarky” trophy in an off-the-charts display of cute Super Bowl Sunday entertainment.

But the televised event is more than just flippy tails and floppy ears. Puppy Bowl seeks to break “the stereotypes of what adoption means and what shelters have,” said Linda Torelli, chief marketing officer of the Brandywine Valley SPCA.

While some people think that shelters house only broken animals or those nobody wants, “the truth is, these are terrific companions that come here for a wide variety of reasons” Torelli said. Most of the surrenders have “nothing to do with the pets themselves,” she added.

Participating usually helps shelters, by bringing attention and website traffic, as well as more people calling to ask about adoption or fostering.
