Springfield Hospital, part of Crozer Health, has temporarily closed its emergency room.

Prospect Medical Holdings Inc. has named Kevin Spiegel the CEO for Crozer Health. He replaces Peter Adamo, who held the position for two years, writes Harold Brubaker for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Spiegel joined Prospect as senior vice president of strategy and revenue development in March 2020. Before that, he was CEO of Erlanger Health System, a seven-hospital system in Chattanooga, Tenn., for six years.

Prospect, a for-profit company based in Los Angeles, has owned Crozer since 2016.

Crozer Health runs four Delaware County hospitals: Crozer-Chester Medical Center, Delaware County Memorial, Springfield Hospital, and Taylor Hospital.

The change in CEOs comes as the healthcare organization copes with staff shortages and an influx of omicron patients.

Last month, Crozer closed the maternity unit at Delaware County Memorial Hospital, consolidating it with Crozer-Chester.

Also, a note on the Crozer website states that as of Jan. 14, hospital-based services at Springfield Hospital have been temporarily suspended.

A state-organized strike team of nurses and respiratory therapists were sent to Crozer last weekend by acting Pennsylvania Health Secretary Keara Klinepeter as short-term staffing for up to two weeks to help cope with the omicron surge, writes Pat Ralph for PhillyVoice.

“We want to ensure hospitals and healthcare workers are ready to care for everyone who comes in now, and we want hospitals to develop their own longer-term sustainable staffing solutions,” Klinepeter said.

COVID-19 hospitalizations in Pennsylvania are down 13 percent but still high, Klinepeter said.

There are 4,763 patients hospitalized with COVID-19 in Pennsylvania, according to the state’s dashboard. That includes 780 patients in intensive care units and nearly 500 on ventilators.
