One of the biggest challenges new leaders face early in their careers is interviewing candidates and hiring those who are a good fit for the company, writes James Price for Express Employment Professionals.

Glassdoor estimates that each corporate job opening receives approximately 250 resumes, and that just four to six people interview for the position. It’s a challenge, narrowing down all those applicants to find the right person. Here are a few tips for screening, interviewing, and hiring:

  1. Imagine the Ideal Candidate: Hiring the wrong person for a job can be costly, not only in terms of time and money but also productivity and employee morale. It’s critical to know exactly what you want and need in a candidate. Create a list of qualities and skills the perfect candidate should have. Although finding the perfect candidate may be wishful thinking when you’re in a time crunch, you can nonetheless prioritize certain things in your search. Distinguish between “must haves” and “nice to haves.”
  2. Master Video Interviews: The pandemic has made the video interview here to stay. Many hiring decision-makers say they are tougher with candidates in remote interviews as compared to in-person. Before you begin an interview, create a hierarchy of expectations of what the ideal candidate will be like, and a simple rule is to make no distinction between in-person or video interviews.
  3. Hiring: Job candidates in this market may have other offers on the table and could be weighing their options. Candidates now have more leverage to negotiate during this stage of the hiring process. Before offering a job, know what incentives your company is and isn’t willing to offer in order to land a candidate.
