Berwyn is home to a new star-spangled mural populated by 35 locals. Identifying them all has become a favorite pursuit of passersby, writes Caroline O’Halloran for SAVVY Main Line.

Carrie Kingsbury, of Promiseland Murals in nearby Birdsboro, painted the mural on the wall of John Thomas’s Barbershop at 682 Lancaster Avenue. It replaced a 15-year-old Victorian-era mural that was showing its years. Eadeh Enterprises, a major landlord in town, funded the new artwork, with its Fourth of July theme.

It took Kingsbury several days to paint each person and another three weeks for the flag.

Among the locals who are depicted on the mural are:

  • Frank Chiavaroli of Frankie’s Fellini Café
  • Vern Burling of La Cabra Brewing
  • Kim Cuthbert of Sweet Jazmine’s
  • Molly Ryan and Meg Robertson of Kramer Drive
  • Chrissy Piombino Bennett of StudioFlora
  • Eamon Brazunis (and kids) of Berwyn Fire Co.

Eadeh president Stacey Ballard said that winnowing down the portraits was tough, considering the abundance of community-minded locals.

“We’d need a huge wall to include everyone who deserves to be recognized,” she said. “This is just a sampling.”
