VISTA Leadership Megastars Steve Walton

Steve Walton, an Eagle Scout and native of Terre Haute, Ind., is the Vice President of Health, Safety, Environment (HSE) & Sustainability for West Pharmaceutical Services, a global manufacturer in the design and production of containment and delivery systems for injectable medicines.

Walton, who possesses a bachelor’s degree in Biology from Indiana University and a master’s degree in Occupational Safety Management from Indiana State University, said his proudest professional achievement is working to make West Pharmaceutical Services a leading corporate citizen.

“I enjoy working with great people at all levels of my organization to improve the safety and environmental performance of our manufacturing sites,” he said.

Walton offered his thoughts on what makes a successful leader, saying that he or she must provide structure, guidance, expectations, and inspiration to others.

“Leaders must earn and maintain the trust of his/her team through setting the example in terms of work output, decision-making, and credibility,” said Walton. “I think a good leader also builds a solid team of like-minded/talented individuals and mentors them to ensure the organization has very solid internal choices for future leadership needs.”

Of the 12 Principles of the Scout Law — Trustworthy, Loyal, Helpful, Friendly, Courteous, Kind, Obedient, Cheerful, Thrifty, Brave, Clean, and Reverent — Walton believes that “Trustworthy” has had the greatest impact on his career and life.

“I am an Eagle Scout and have always tried to keep the Scout Law in mind as I live my personal and professional life,” he said. “I think the principle that has served me best is Trustworthy. A lot of my career has been done through the influence, education, and motivation of others. There are often alternatives to the direction and action I am recommending. By establishing and maintaining my Trustworthiness within an organization, I believe my peers and co-workers follow my guidance and, in fact, look to me for direction on tough decisions and issues. Without Trustworthiness, I think the relationships and decision-making would be a much harder process, and I would have achieved less in my career.”

The Chester County Council, Boy Scouts of America will honor Walton and the 11 other VISTA Leadership Megastars at a hybrid awards ceremony on Sept. 14 at its new Program, Activity, and Resource Campus (PARC) in Exton. Sponsorship opportunities are still available. For more information, contact Sarah Ponzio at sarah.ponzio@scouting.org or 610-696-2900 x 121.
