Chester County is the best county to live in Pennsylvania, according to recently published rankings by 24/7 Wall Street that use data from the Human Development Index (HDI).

The HDI is a composite of life expectancy, education, and per-capita-income indicators, which are used to rank countries into four tiers of human development.

To determine the best counties to live in each state, 24/7 Wall Street analyzed:

  • the poverty rate
  • share of adults with at least a bachelor’s degree
  • average life expectancy at birth

Chester County has a poverty rate of 6.4 percent, which is nearly half the state’s rate of 12.4 percent.

Our life expectancy is 81.4 years, which is higher than the state average of 78.4 years.

Meanwhile, the county has 53 percent of adults with a bachelor’s degree, which is also significantly above the state average of 31.4 percent. This statistic makes it the only county in Pennsylvania where more than half of all adults hold a bachelor’s degree.

The advantages of living in Chester County, as identified by the HDI, have not gone unnoticed. The county’s population has grown by 2.6 percent in the last five years, compared with 0.3 percent overall for Pennsylvania.
