The Kennett Area YMCA is offering a four-day water safety course for children ages 6-11 beginning Monday, June 7. There is no charge to attend, and all are welcome, but advanced registration is required.

Drowning is the leading cause of accidental death in children one to four years old, and the second-leading cause of accidental death in children five to 14 years old. Drowning can happen quickly and silently, but is fully preventable, which is why the YMCA, America’s leading swim instructor for more than 100 years, is committed to educating everyone on how to be safe in and around water.

“With a little bit of knowledge, drowning is preventable,” said Denise Elms, Aquatics Director at the Kennett Area YMCA. “We are committed to ensuring the safety of all and do all we can to equip everyone with critical knowledge and water safety skills. No one should have to face the tragedy of losing a child to drowning.”

The four-day course, taught by a certified YMCA swim instructor, will help kids learn critical water safety and life-saving skills such as what to do if they find themselves in the water unexpectedly. Participants need to attend all four days of the program, which will be held from 5-7 PM each day.

Health and safety measures are in place to create the safest experience possible.
