Hankin Group has been awarded LEED Silver for its most recent project with the University of Pennsylvania.

LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design), developed by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), is the most widely used green building rating system in the world and an international symbol of excellence. Through design, construction, and operations practices that improve environmental and human health, LEED-certified buildings are helping to make the world more sustainable.

“It has been rewarding to help deliver another successful building project for University of Pennsylvania,” said Lance Hillegas, Hankin Group’s Vice President of Design and Sustainable Development. “All of the many team members involved worked to overcome obstacles for a spectacular end result. Receiving LEED Silver Certification last week was the final touch of completion for Tangen Hall.”

Hankin Group achieved LEED certification by implementing practical and measurable strategies and solutions in areas including sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection, and indoor environmental quality. Green buildings allow companies to operate more sustainably and give the people inside them a healthier, more comfortable space to work.

The Hankin development team worked with Hunter Roberts Construction (general contractor), KSS Architects (architect), The Stonehouse Group (LEED consultant), The Harman Group (structural engineering), Pennoni (civil engineering), and Bala Consulting Engineers (MEP consultant) to bring the project to life.

Tangen Hall is a 68,000-square-foot project that was completed last year on the northeast corner of 40th and Sansom streets on Penn’s campus. The building will serve as a core learning space with diverse uses and easy access to public transportation. LEED-certified buildings have 34 percent lower CO2 emissions, consume 25 percent less energy and 11 percent less water, and have diverted more than 80 million tons of waste from landfills.

Tangen Hall is a prime example of how the innovative work of project teams can create local solutions that contribute to making a global difference.”

Certification is proof that buildings are going above and beyond to ensure the space is constructed and operated to the highest level of sustainability. More than 15 commercial and institutional projects from Hankin Group are currently participating in LEED.
