Harcum College Hosts Drive-Through Commencement; Grads Stop for Diploma, Photo at President’s House

More than 175 graduates of Harcum College – many of them accompanied by family members – piled into their cars and drove through the campus’s back parking lot to receive their diplomas from President Jon Jay DeTemple.

The 105th Commencement began at 9 AM with the Dental programs and continued through 4 PM with Human Services graduates. It was the first drive-through, hybrid event in the college’s history and was conceived as a way to offer 2021 graduates some traditional elements of an in-person ceremony while still observing CDC protocols to limit the spread of COVID-19.

A small stage was erected in the backyard of the President’s House on campus. Graduates left their cars, received their diplomas, and had their photographs taken before returning to their cars and exiting the campus. The above video captures the excitement and energy of the day.

Other elements of the ceremony included a livestream of the event and a 30-minute video (see below) that announced student award winners and recognized the top faculty award winner.

The student award winners, with their major in parentheses, were:

  • Harcum Award: La’Vinia Pitts (Criminal Justice)
  • Student Leadership Award: Raelynn Forencsik (Interior Design)
  • President’s Award: Matias Bentancour (Veterinary Nursing)

More than 330 students were eligible to graduate for having met the degree requirements for either an Associate of Arts or an Associate of Science. This year marks the first graduating class for Photography and Graphic Design, two majors acquired when the Antonelli Institute closed in 2018.
