Marple, Newtown Townships Bathed in Blue to Remember Seven-Year-Old Lost to the Flu

By

Blue lights shine on homes and businesses in Marple and Newtown townships and reach as far as Ocean City, N.J., reports Dann Cuellar for 6ABC.

The light is there to honor the memory of seven-year-old Matthew Wzorek of Broomall who died unexpectedly of the flu last year on Feb. 16.

“It just touches everybody’s hearts, as well as minds. So I just wanted to help in any way I could with this,” said Maria Tucker, who helped get the blue light movement off the ground.

“Our community was devastated with the passing of Matthew,” said family friend Karen McCollum.

Matthew’s mother, Rebecca Wzorek said Matthew “had a compassion and kindness about him that were so unique. He makes us all aspire to try to be better people.”

McCollum said the blue lights were a way for the community to support the family on the one-year anniversary of Matthew’s passing.

Blue was his favorite color.

Facebook lit up with messages from people asking where they can get a blue light.

In the bitter cold, friends got together to light the Wzorek family house in blue.

Even in Ocean City, the bridge is decked out in blue.
