Regal Gymnastics in Essex, Vt., raised $58,250 for Unite for HER, a West Chester-based nonprofit that provides support to women in Chester County with breast cancer, as part of this year’s Pink Invitational, writes Austin Danforth for the Burlington (Vt.) Free Press.
The athletes first set out to raise $10,000 but easily sailed past their original goal, multiplying it by more than five.
“It certainly surprised us,” said Regal owner Tom Reeves. “From what I could see in the past, a national-level gym might raise $10,000.”
One gymnast managed to raise around $3,000 by selling homemade cookies. She received more than 130 orders for batches of a dozen that each sold for $20.
The success of the fundraising got Unite for HER to change its plans, which usually involve distributing donations to organizations in the Philadelphia area.
Instead, the charity will let the Regal gymnasts decide which programs in the Green Mountain State will receive the funds.
“They were overwhelmed a Vermont gym got up to the $50,000 level,” said Reeves. “To anybody, these numbers are big numbers, adults or kids.”
