Unionville High School, which used “Indians” as the nickname for its sports teams for the past six decades, has chosen “Longhorns” as its new nickname and mascot, writes Neil Geoghegan for PA Prep Live.

The new moniker was chosen after a thorough process that included gathering input from all throughout the community.

The old name was deemed too pejorative and dropped, much in the way that “Redskins” was recently discarded by Washington’s NFL franchise. It was adopted in 1954 as a reference to the Lenape Indians who once lived in the area.

The school started phasing the name out five years ago. Finally, in August, the school board voted to completely retire the mascot. The board also formed a 38-member committee of teachers, students, staff, alumni, and community members to decide on a replacement.

“It is going to be a hard transition for some, but I think over the next few years students are going to love it,” said Molly Evanko, Unionville’s student council president. “Any big change like this will take some getting used to, but the students are going to love having a mascot they can really support.”
