Pennsylvania Hunt Cup Races Raise Funds for Chester County Food Bank
The traditional crowds were not in attendance at the spectator-free Pennsylvania Hunt Cup on Sunday afternoon, but spirits were still high. Despite the adverse weather, the races welcomed nearly 50 horses to run the Unionville race course – all to benefit the Chester County Food Bank.
“This year more than ever, our goal for the race meet has been twofold: to support the horsemen who put on the show and to raise money for the Food Bank,” said race chair Anne Moran.
The Pennsylvania Hunt Cup’s committee conceived an innovative way to support its charity – by asking patrons to donate the price of their race ticket to the Food Bank. Since the races were live-streamed, it was possible for traditional spectators to be part of the action while staying safe at home.
This effort will add nearly $10,000 to the total donation to the Food Bank. The Pennsylvania Hunt Cup is still accepting donations on its website. The impact of even the smallest donation is great – a $100 donation, for instance, will feed a family for two months.
The featured race of the day, the 86th running of the Pennsylvania Hunt Cup, started 10 horses to race over the four-mile course. At the end of four miles, Bill Wylie’s Mystic Strike took home the win – two in a row for Wylie’s horse, who also won the Hunt Cup in 2019.
Local jockey and high school senior Skylar McKenna won the second race riding Charlie Fenwick Jr.’s Royal Ruse, while local jockey Parker Hendriks took home a win in the final race of the day, riding Sherry Fenwick’s Forgiving.
“During this unprecedented time, the Food Bank is seeing an increase over 60 percent” in need, said Chester County Food Bank Director Larry Welsch, noting that these challenging times affect everyone in Chester County. “We’ve mobilized our network of vendors to maintain an average inventory of 500,000 pounds of food to meet our needs. The Food Bank is grateful to have the Moran family as our champions against hunger in the region, and to have the PA Hunt Cup community as a partner in our vision to create a food-secure Chester County.”
