#WinterWhiteOut. #GivingTuesday. #GivingGarage. These are Home of the Sparrow’s #’s for one of the most generous giving days of the year.

Giving Tuesday is almost here. Why is that so important?

For women and mothers who are facing homelessness, the cost of essential household items can be insurmountable. Did you know that government assistance does not cover necessary household items that are used every day? That is where Home of the Sparrow – an Exton-based nonprofit that partners with women facing homelessness to secure housing, achieve long-term stability, and chart new paths for their futures – is making plans to once again help.

Giving Tuesday, a global day for giving, happens this year on Dec. 1. It is a day focused on philanthropy, and Home of the Sparrow is launching a campaign called #WinterWhiteOut to fill its #GivingGarage.

Home of the Sparrow is collecting:

  • paper towels
  • toilet paper
  • tissues
  • feminine hygiene products
  • cleaning products
  • laundry and dish detergents
  • soap, shampoo, and conditioner
  • store gift cards

These items will allow Home of the Sparrow’s program coordinators to assemble what the nonprofit calls “go-bags.” These are emergency bags filled with household items that Home of the Sparrow collects in December and shares all year long with its clients.

“Giving Tuesday is an amazing time for the world to focus on philanthropy,” said Michelle Venema, Home of the Sparrow’s CEO. “We are excited to once again highlight our theme, #WinterWhiteout, gathering hard-to-find and expensive paper products and cleaning supplies. I’m hoping our local community finds awesome deals on Black Friday, shops locally on Small Business Saturday, finishes up some shopping on Cyber Monday, and really feels the philanthropic, holiday spirit on Giving Tuesday!”

Interested companies or organizations are invited to hold their own collection drives, or set up their own individual fundraising pages on social media. Home of the Sparrow will, in turn, use monetary donations to buy items from a locally owned business.

The first $5,000 in gifts will be matched, dollar for dollar, thanks to a generous friend of Home of the Sparrow.
