In late September, Home of the Sparrow launched “Decorating for a Mission: A Door for Everyone” to celebrate community spirit as the fall approached and to raise awareness about housing insecurity in Chester County.

The door-decorating contest recently concluded, having raised $20,000 for the Exton-based nonprofit that partners with women facing homelessness to secure housing, achieve long-term stability, and chart new paths for their futures.

“We want to thank everyone who participated in our 2020 #ADoorForEveryone contest,” said Michelle Venema, CEO of Home of the Sparrow. “Your participation raised awareness and support of our mission here at Home of the Sparrow. We also want to thank our generous sponsors whose donations are helping to keep our women and children safely housed.”

Home of the Sparrow awarded gift cards to the winner in each of the following categories:

  • Best Fall Décor
  • Best Office
  • Spookiest
  • Most Surprising
  • Most Time Spent
  • Most Creative

“We loved all the creative entries,” said Venema, “and when businesses and offices joined in the fun, we were delighted to create a new contest category!”

Although Chester County is one of the wealthiest counties in the nation, many single women and mothers face the same problem – a lack of safe and affordable housing. Unexpected events like divorce, illness, or death of a spouse can quickly make it impossible to pay rent, despite working full time.

Home of the Sparrow provides a safety net for these women who are in danger of homelessness. The organization believes in the power of education and financial literacy as a tool to gain financial self-sufficiency and long-term housing stability.
