More than a year after signing with Manchester City, one of the world’s most renowned soccer clubs and one bankrolled by billionaire owners from the United Arab Emirates, Downingtown West grad Zack Steffen is still waiting for a chance to properly show off his goalkeeping skills, writes Jonathan Tannenwald for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Last season, there were enough goalies ahead of him on the roster that it made sense for the team to loan Steffen, the starter on the U.S. Men’s National Team, to Germany’s Fortuna Dusseldorf. This season, however, he is the backup to starter Ederson Santana de Moraes, which means that he spends a lot of time on the bench.

Steffen has played just two games for Manchester City since returning from Germany, and both of them have been in the EFL Cup, a competition mostly treated as an afterthought by English Premier League teams.

Now, he’s hoping more playing time is in his future.

“I want to be out on the field,” said Steffen. “I’ll keep working hard and keep pushing those guys in front of me, and they’ll keep pushing me.”
