The overwhelming support from Philadelphia and its suburban counties helped former Vice President Joe Biden flip Pennsylvania back to the Democrats in last week’s presidential election, writes John Duchneskie for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Biden managed to build on Hillary Clinton’s 55 percent share of the vote in the suburbs in 2016, bringing it up to 59 percent this election cycle. He also received roughly 283,000 more votes than President Donald Trump, an improvement of about 95,000 votes over Clinton’s margin.

The turnout in the suburbs was also high, with more than 1.5 million votes cast as of Monday, an increase of 173,000 votes compared to the 2016 election.

The map that breaks down the vote totals by municipality in suburban counties shows that as of Monday, the majority of places in Chester, Delaware, and Montgomery counties favored Biden.

Although the map is predominantly blue the closer it is to Philadelphia, there are also some deep red areas in each county that have shown their support for Trump by giving him more than 60 percent of votes.
