Despite the challenges created by the pandemic, local doctors are able to stay on top of their patients’ health thanks to telemedicine, writes Melissa Jacobs for Main Line Today.

Telemedicine includes video conferencing, secure messaging, and phone calls. And while the technology has been around for seven years, many providers and patients have decided to stick with in-person visits.

However, now that the pandemic has made face-to-face appointments difficult, telemedicine is there to help bridge the gap, according to Dr. Sharayne Mark, a cardiologist with Penn Medicine’s Chester County Cardiology Associates in West Chester and Downingtown.

“A number of our patients need regular monitoring, so we moved more fully to telemedicine,” said Dr. Mark. “With video appointments, and sometimes even just a phone call, we can get a lot done and be of service to our patients.”

OBGYNs are also finding that video platforms are perfect to check on their pregnant patients. According to Dr. Jennifer Gilbert of Paoli OBGYN, physicians can tell a lot about the status of a baby through video.

“I know how a belly should look at 32 or 38 weeks,” she said.
