While no one knew at the beginning of the summer what “back to school” would look like, we of course knew that kids would return to school in some fashion.

Thus, Home of the Sparrow forged ahead with its annual Back-to-School Program, collecting hundreds of pounds of school supplies – notebooks, pencils, crayons, tape, glue, scissors, calculators, binders, and backpacks – from generous donors.

Scores of individuals, companies, and organizations contributed money and supplies to provide 75 children with backpacks to kick off the school year. While practicing social distancing, volunteers helped stuff the backpacks with age-appropriate supplies to ensure that the recipients are equipped for learning.

“Our HOS donor community rose to the occasion again, and I am so inspired by their generosity,” said Michelle Venema, CEO of Home of the Sparrow. “In the midst of a global pandemic, with a very different look to the school year, we knew the children in our programs were still excited to get ready for back to school. Our donors and volunteers provided everything a child needs to start the school year off with confidence. New pencils, notebooks, scissors, glue, face masks, special outfits, and new age-appropriate backpacks were just the ticket to motivate our children. Now, it’s back to school with a great big smile! Thank you, donors!”

Based in Exton, Home of the Sparrow partners with women facing homelessness to secure housing, achieve long-term stability, and chart new paths for their futures.
