Rory McIlroy, the top-ranked golfer in the world, has joined MVP Capital Partners in leading the first round of institutional financing for Wayne-based Golf Genius, writes Michelle Caffrey for the Philadelphia Business Journal.

The firm declined to disclose the financial terms of the investment except for stating that it was a “multimillion-dollar round of equity financing” that closed on May 20.

Golf Genius was founded 11 years ago by former IBM executive and tech CEO Michael Zisman. The company sells tournament management software to more than 9,000 golf facilities and associations. Its main product is Golf Genius TMS, which streamlines the administration process and provides live scoring and digital leaderboards.

The company plans to use the new funding to further upgrade and improve its product, as well as expand its geographic reach. It will also use the funding to capitalize on recent growth and explore merger and acquisition opportunities.

“By broadening our investor base, we can accelerate our growth strategy both organically and through acquisition,” said Zisman. “We’re delighted to have the world’s No. 1-ranked professional golfer and a local private equity firm as new partners.”
