The first day back to school is important in every child’s life. For many mothers and children in Home of the Sparrow’s programs, however, it’s also a worrisome time.

On a small budget, it can be difficult to buy backpacks, shoes, uniforms, and school supplies.

Education is a major step toward a successful life, which is why the Exton-based nonprofit wants all of the kids in its programs to have an exciting start to the new school year.

As a result, Home of the Sparrow – which partners with women facing homelessness to secure housing, achieve long-term stability, and chart new paths for their futures – has launched its annual Back-to-School Program.

“It’s summertime, and for the team at Home of the Sparrow, that means helping our families get ready for going back to school,” said Michelle Venema, CEO of Home of the Sparrow. “While we don’t know yet what ‘back to school’ will look like for the children in Chester County, we do know that schools will open in some fashion and children will go back to learning. That means our youngsters will need backpacks, pencils, paper, glue, binders, highlighters, folders, and so much more.

“During these unprecedented times, when COVID has impacted the financial stability of so many, our moms need our help more than ever to make sure their children have the supplies they need to succeed and thrive during the new school year.”

You can choose to help a specific child – 20 children have been “adopted” thus far and donors are needed to help an additional 26 students – or hold a drive to collect supplies. Your support means the world to these kids, their mothers, and the community.

“For the first time, I was excited to go back to school,” said one of the kids who received new school supplies through Home of the Sparrow. “I had a new backpack like all the other kids, a cool outfit, and even a new lunchbox. I felt ready to learn!”
