Small Number of Remaining Employees Makes It Difficult to Maintain Longwood Gardens

With only a small group of employees still caring for plants, it is hard to keep up the level of care Longwood Gardens requires at any time of the year, writes Mark Eichmann for WHYY.

Usually, the 400-plus employees who care for and maintain the plants at Longwood are more than doubled during this period in preparation for the summer season. But with the attraction closed since March 13, there are only around 45 people left to do that job.

“Our primary goal right now is risk management and mitigating loss,” said Paul Redman, Longwood’s president and CEO.

For the orchids, this has meant removing them from their display and into the greenhouse to ensure the entire collection is not lost within weeks.

Longwood is already looking toward the future and the reopening of its doors, whenever that might be.

“When we do open our garden gates, our guests may not see the full-blown Longwood display that they have seen in the past, but they are going to see something that is beautiful and extraordinary,” said Redman.
