Kimberton Woman, Cancer Survivor Familiar with Quarantines Pens Column for Inquirer

Many people who have had to fight cancer in their lives have, in a sense, already practiced for a quarantine, writes Denise Teter for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

As a cancer survivor living in Kimberton, Teter had to limit her exposure to others who might be sick when she began chemo and radiation, as her immune system was nonexistent.

Eight years after beating cancer, she is at high risk for COVID-19 and is once again self-isolating. She is taking the quarantine seriously for several reasons, including that it could affect her treatment. So far, she has been working in the garden with her family to break the monotony. She is also walking in her neighborhood while keeping the appropriate distance from other walkers.

She emphasized that this experience does not have to be a bad one.

“Coronavirus may have stealthily sneaked up on the world and made its voice heard loud and clear, but we don’t have to take this quarantine sitting down,” she wrote. “We can take control, we can survive a quarantine, and together, each doing our part, we can flatten the curve and kick COVID-19 to the curb.”
