A group of employees from the Wegmans stores in both Downingtown and Malvern visited the Chester County Food Bank to present a check for $120,822 and deliver a truckload of nearly nine tons of non-perishable food.

Wegmans employees volunteered their morning to packing bags for the Food Bank’s Weekend Backpack Program that provides more than 4,400 packs per month to schools and after-school programs throughout the county.

“I am truly amazed at the collaboration between Wegmans and their customers,” said Larry Welsch, the Food Bank’s Executive Director. “Wegmans has been a partner with us since 2010, donating nearly $1 million dollars through Check Out Hunger.

“Unfortunately, food insecurity continues to increase in Chester County, so we are ever-grateful that Wegmans is a steadfast supporter of the Food Bank and our mission to mobilize the community to ensure access to real, healthy food.”

The funds were raised during Wegmans’ Check Out Hunger campaign, which ran from Oct. 20 through Dec. 14. During the campaign, customers and employees could contribute any amount at checkout, with 100 percent of the proceeds going to each store’s local food bank.

The success of Check Out Hunger and donation of food strengthens each year, thereby allowing the Food Bank to serve more of its neighbors in need.

“We strive to make a difference in every community we serve, and we couldn’t do that without the help of our employees, customers, and community partners,” said Amy Miller, Manager of the Malvern Wegmans. “We’re especially proud of the partnerships we’ve built to support local food banks. The money so generously donated during our Check Out Hunger campaign goes a long way to fighting hunger in our neighborhoods all year long.”
