Surrey Services for Seniors, the Devon-based nonprofit, is continuing its care for older adults.

Although its locations are closed, Surrey is finding new and different ways to help seniors with meals, wellness check-ins, and virtual programming to ease anxiety and social isolation.

Grab and Go lunches – available at Devon, Havertown, and Media – ensure older adults can get a nutritious lunch. To reserve a lunch, e-mail info@surreyservices.org the day before or call one of the three locations.

Working with its community partners – Meals on Wheels and the Delaware County Office on Aging – Surrey continues to provide home-delivered meals.

Isolated seniors are also hearing a friendly voice, thanks to Surrey’s check-in call program. In Media, these calls have helped a 100-year-old man, who has been delayed in joining his wife at an assisted living community, to feel less lonely and depressed.

E-mails containing links to activities enable seniors to participate in exercise and other enjoyable programs. These e-mails give them something to look forward to that reduces their stress and isolation, providing a welcome distraction.

Surrey has established a Facebook group to function as a virtual Surrey center where members and friends can check in, share information, play games, and keep connected.

“I have been so distressed about missing Surrey classes, especially exercise,” wrote one woman. “It was so wonderful to open my e-mail on Monday (from Surrey) and take the armchair trip to Ireland.”

There are ways that community members can help from home. If you’d like to volunteer to make friendly phone calls to isolated seniors, e-mail info@surreyservices.org. Donations to help with the cost of meals can be made by clicking here.
