Qlik Helps U.K.’s National Health Service Develop App That Tracks Patients, Staff

At a time when health systems around the world are facing an unprecedented crisis, King of Prussia-based Qlik is helping customers use data to help alleviate at least some of the pressure on hospitals around the world, writes Lis Evenstad for Computer Weekly.

Currently, it is of vital importance for hospitals to share timely information and data to offer better care and reduce the spread of the virus.

To that end, Qlik has helped University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust in the United Kingdom develop an app that uses data to track patients and staff throughout the hospital.

The app identifies, tracks, and reports patients who have been tested for coronavirus, along with the results.

“It tells us their entire journey through the hospital,” said Rob O’Neill, head of information at the trust. “For instance, have they been admitted to the emergency department, then moved onto a ward, and what particular location within the ward?”

The app then links into the clinical app used in the hospital’s COVID-19 control room. This allows infection control teams and clinicians to have a clear picture of where any patients who have tested positive are located.

Additionally, the app lets the hospital perform analytics on which other patients and staff may have come in contact with the virus while in the hospital.

This gives the trust a “view of the journey the patients have taken and what services they interacted with,” said O’Neill.
