Nate Hyson, a student at the Marsh Creek Sixth Grade Center in Downingtown, has received commendations from several public officials for his philanthropic efforts, writes Bill Rettew for the Daily Local News.

Hyson collects monetary donations and then purchases and donates baby food. The 12-year-old started collecting money for this noble cause when he was just six. He built a collection box and collected $29 from neighbors at his Coatesville home.

Since he knows he cannot feed everybody, he decided to make babies his priority.

“I choose to feed babies because they are too little to feed themselves,” said Hyson. “It gives me a sense of satisfaction and it makes me feel good because I’m helping other people.”

After their first donation to the Coatesville YWCA Gateway Shelter, the boy and his family – mother Sarah, father Chris, and brother Elliot – donated 3,000 pounds of baby food to Chester County Food Bank.

Hyson tries to donate once per month and has helped form the “Baby Food Fund” charity with his mother. His efforts were recognized by Michelle Obama, as well as several local officials.
