According to Chester Springs-based running coach Nate Robinson, training to run in a marathon requires starting slowly and then gradually increasing the intensity, writes Katherine Nails for Main Line Today.

Robinson said that many new runners tend not to find the initial workouts challenging enough, and they often start training too hard far too early. This can often leave them with harsh consequences they then have to try to overcome.

“You’re not only more susceptible to injury, but also to overtraining, which equals burnout,” he said.

The first step marathoners-to-be need to take is to determine why it is they want to run.

“Find something that motivates you that has depth and meaning to keep you going through this,” said Robinson. “It’s a long, long process. You need to be intrinsically motivated.”

Some serious mental training is also required, as most marathoners experience a kind of mental fog by around the 20th mile. At that moment, the brain needs to default to positivity and tenacity.

However, in the end, to tackle a marathon, runners need to maintain both a laser focus and an intense commitment.
