Despite being given a dire prognosis after suffering a devastating injury, Lauren Garrett, a student at Bishop Shanahan High School, managed to get back on her feet just in time for Christmas, writes Amy Cherry for WDEL.

Garrett was hurt when a cheerleading move called the baja went horribly wrong. The teenager had fallen on her back, fracturing her spine.

“I couldn’t feel my legs immediately,” she said. “It was like a switch that just got turned off; it’s broken and it’s bad.”

She was quickly airlifted to Nemours/A.I. duPont Hospital for Children, but the news she received was not good.

“Most people who have these injuries are confined to a wheelchair,” said surgeon Dr. William Mackenzie.

Still, after Dr. Mackenzie had removed pressure from her spine to allow it to heal, Garrett was determined to defy the odds. Through sheer strength and perseverance and after spending 50 nights in hospital, she can now walk again.

“I’m expected to have a full recovery – they call me the miracle baby,” she said.
