Child Guidance Resource Centers is celebrating the five-year anniversary of its Multi-Systemic Therapy (MST) service in Chester County.

It has been offered in Delaware County for 17 years and Montgomery County for 12 years.

Child Guidance acknowledges the 250 Chester County families helped by MST since 2014. Overall, it has served 2,000 families in the five-county Philadelphia region.

MST supports families by enhancing parenting skills and providing intensive family therapy.

Developed at the University of South Carolina in 1985, MST is an evidence-based, proven treatment for teens that helps reduce antisocial behaviors like verbal and physical aggression, property destruction, skipping school, substance abuse, and leaving home without permission.

Some interventions include teaching caregivers to de-escalate volatile situations, hold teens accountable, effectively supervise and monitor the teen so there are fewer opportunities for negative behaviors, improve social behavior, improve academic performance, and increase involvement with positive peers.

“I felt hopeless. My son was full of rage and refused school. He was verbally aggressive,” said one MST mother.

With MST, she felt less alone.

“The MST therapist was a knight in shining armor, a ray of hope when the days were darkest,” she said.

Her son received an evaluation and proper diagnosis, which then brought additional treatment that worked for them. Her son now has passing grades and attends school rather than playing video games all night and sleeping all day.

MST therapists are master’s-level clinicians and attend a specific training to become certified in MST.

More than 85 percent of youth who complete the MST program remain in school or work. Eighty-seven percent of parents feel significantly more confident in their parenting skills after completion of MST.
