Kennett Doctor Among Growing Number Who Provide Direct Care Without Involving Insurance

Dr. Ricky Haug, a family doctor in Kennett Square, is one of a growing number of physicians across the country who are providing direct primary care to patients without involving insurance companies, writes Ford Turner for The Allentown Morning Call.

This burgeoning trend sees patients paying a monthly fee to a doctor, without involving a health insurance provider, and it’s currently being used in more than 1,000 practices across the country.

According to Haug, his patients enjoy the system and the greater access to their doctor it provides.

“They have longer visit times, same-day appointments,” he said. “They can text and e-mail.”

Haug equated the visits from his patients to an owner taking their car in for an oil change. In that case, he explained, auto insurance is also not involved.

“Why do we use our health insurance for a cold?” he said.

This system is already gaining traction in Pennsylvania and also has its supporters in the legislature. State Sen. Pat Browne said he plans to introduce a bill that would remove any legal obstacles to doctors who would like to offer a monthly payment option.
