Berwyn-based Ametek has acquired Pacific Design Technologies, a California-based manufacturer of advanced thermal systems for robotics used in space, for $125 million, writes Michelle Caffrey for the Philadelphia Business Journal.

The electronics manufacturer that employs 18,000 worldwide purchased the privately held PTD to bolster its aerospace and defense capabilities.

PTD was founded 19 years ago. Its liquid cooling products have been used on numerous space, defense, and commercial operations. This includes three robotic missions to Mars and on the International Space Station.

PTD has secured around $14.1 million in Department of Defense and NASA contracts in the last 11 years. Its government contracts started reaching six figures seven years ago and have averaged around 1.8 million a year since.

Besides the federal government, PTD also has many aerospace and defense companies as customers, including Boeing and Lockheed Martin.

The newly acquired company will be folded into Ametek’s electromechanical group as part of the deal.

“PDT is an excellent acquisition for Ametek as it enhances our position in the attractive aerospace and defense sectors,” said Ametek CEO David Zapico. “The company’s innovative technology and differentiated solutions nicely complement our already-deep expertise in thermal management systems.”
