David and Anne Cowburn of West Grove have been celebrating their anniversary for the last 49 years by enjoying a piece of their wedding cake, writes Jane Ridley for the New York Post.

The two met in 1967, when they were both teachers at a junior high school in Wayne. They started dating a year later and were married on July 18, 1970.

On their wedding day, the bride’s mother saved the top tier of their wedding cake and presented it to the happy couple when they returned from their honeymoon in England.

They stored the remains in the freezer and have been enjoying a slice, or crumbs most recently, once a year ever since.

“It’s just a fun, romantic thing that we do,” said Anne, 74.

The cake, which has survived five house moves, is close to being gone. However, the Cowburns have thought of a way to continue the tradition. They plan to bake the remaining crumbs of their original wedding cake into a new cake in time to celebrate their golden wedding anniversary next year.
