Wawa Agrees to Pay $1.4 Million Settlement in Overtime Dispute

By

Some assistant general managers at Wawa who claimed they should have been paid overtime will be receiving money as part of a class-action settlement, writes Jim Walsh for the South Jersey Courier-Post.

Assistant general managers who worked between January 2014 and the end of 2015 will receive an average of $4,268.29, part of the $1.4 million settlement.

About $900,000 will go to 328 current and former assistant general managers. Another $467,000 will go to the workers’ attorneys.

The settlement has additional payments of $5,000 each for a handful of workers who brought the suit in January 2017.

The lawsuit sought overtime pay, claiming Wawa improperly considered the employees to be exempt. It asserted Wawa violated a federal wage law, and state laws in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Maryland.

Wawa denied any wrongdoing in settling the suit. The firm changed the workers’ classification to allow overtime pay in December 2015, a court filing notes.
