After six years with the agency, Melanie Weiler has decided to retire as Executive Director of Kennett Area Community Services, also known as the Kennett Food Cupboard, writes Joan Holliday for Southern Chester County Weeklies.

Prior to her position at KACS, Weiler worked at the local YMCA. After seeing a homeless man in January 2013 warming up at Walmart, she was ready to make a change.

“Here we are, the wealthiest county in Pennsylvania and have all these resources, and there is this man!” she said.

She realized that, despite the wealth of the area, homelessness was an issue in southern Chester County, and it needed to be addressed. She learned about the KACS opening and soon joined the agency.

During her years at KACS, Weiler helped create a collaborative to address homelessness. She has also worked on searching out best practices in dealing with poverty.
