Annual Whitford Classic Connects People Who Care with Causes That Matter

Representatives from the beneficiaries of last year's Whitford Classic pose for a picture with some of the event's organizers.

The roots of Whitford Country Club in Exton were planted in generosity.

In 1955, a gentleman named Al Ostheimer gifted 168 acres to “share the sporting experience with community neighbors.” To determine what to do with the land, 60 people gathered, and after much discussion, it was decided that the land would be used for golf, tennis, and swimming.

More than a half-century later, Whitford’s members remain a generous group of people who provide time, money, and resources to a number of charities. Many of them serve on nonprofit boards and committees throughout the region and roll up their sleeves to do volunteer work.

Their generosity will once again be on display at the Ninth Annual Whitford Classic, where tennis players will take to the court and golfers will hit the links to raise funds for a number of worthy causes, from Sept. 20-22 at the country club.

The Whitford Classic was created by a few of the country club’s visionary members who wanted to create an opportunity to give back to the community in which they work, play, and raise their families. Almost a decade later, the event has grown in popularity and has become a popular vehicle to connect people who care with causes that matter.

“Whitford has really distinguished itself (among other country clubs) with its charitable arm,” said Kim Brumbaugh, the CEO of Brumbaugh Wealth Management in Exton and a member of the Classic’s committee.

Since the inaugural event in 2011, the Whitford Classic has generated approximately $950,000 and will cross the million-dollar threshold this year. One hundred percent of those proceeds have been granted to 56 different local organizations that work to make a difference in the lives of Chester County residents.

More than 600 people were a part of last year’s event.

This year, there is still room for corporate sponsors who would like to maximize their exposure at the Whitford Classic, as well as tickets available to the dinner gala with live and silent auctions on Friday, Sept. 20. Click here to learn more.
